Detailed description of Urinalysis test components

Urinalysis Tests

Urinalysis
Urinalysis is the physical, chemical, and microscopic examination of urine. It involves a number of tests to detect and measure various compounds that pass through the urine. A urinalysis may be done:

As part of a routine medical exam to screen for early signs of disease
To check for blood in the urine
To diagnose a urinary tract infection

If you are complaining of abdominal pain, back pain, painful or frequent urination a urinalysis may also be used to diagnose the cause.

Normal Results: Normal urine may vary in color from almost colorless to dark yellow. Some foods (like beets and blackberries) may turn the urine a red color. A urinalysis has many interpretations, doctors will look for "red flags" that could suggest abnormalities.

Abnormal Results: Usually the following are not found in urine, glucose, ketones, protein and bilirubin, hemoglobin, nitrates, red blood cells, white blood cells.  If these substances are found in urine, it coudl be an indication of a problem.

The three distinct testing phases of a Urinalysis are the following:

1. Physical examination - This test evaluates the urine's color, clarity and concentration

2. Chemical examination - This tests for 9 substances that provide valueable information about health and disease

3. Microscopic examination - This phase identifies and counts the type of cells, casts, crystals and other components (mucus, bacteria) that can be found in the urine.
